General guidelines for SEO

Some things to think about when you start optimizing your website
Ok you decided to optimize your website for the search engines! But where to start?

Start thinking about SEO even before you register your domain!

That´s right! The domain name itself is a very important factor in how your website ranks.
Decide what keywords or keyphrases you want your site to rank high for before purchasing a domain.
This is also a part of why domain trading has become so popular, everybody wants a good domain name but few are able to find it.
If you want to optimize your site for popular dictionary keywords, chances are very big you will see that these domains are already taken.

So how to solve this then?
Well it depends on how serious you are with your website and what your ambitions are.
It´s completly out of the question for someone that makes websites for a hobby to buy a popular domain for $1500. On the other hand if this domain name would be perfect for your business and you have a good budget
it can actually be a good investment.

People know

There are tons of domain traders out there that know the value of good keyword domains and buy several domains every day and then wait for a good time to sell them.
It´s a free market and anyone can buy domains, but try to not buy domain names with Trademark issues etc.
Chances are you will loose that domain sooner or later.
Kind of sucky to invest a lot of time and effort into your website and then someone comes and take it away!

Look for yourself

First thing to do when you decided what keywords you want to rank high for is to try and register a domain name that includes this keyword/keyphrase .
Chances are high that if you are looking for a popular keyword domain it already will be taken.
Then try to switch keyword combinations and come up with something that both sounds good and also includes your selected keywords.

I can give you an example of how I used this myself recently.

The arcade site

I bought a real good looking script for an arcade site but didn´t have a good domain to put the content in.
All good domain names were taken :( examples: arcade.com playarcade.com and so on.
But I found a very good tool which helped me decide what name to register :)

Overture keyword selector tool

This is a tool that let´s you check for how many times specific search phrases has been searched for.
Simply write your keyword and a list will appear with how many times that this specific keyword has been searched for. This will give you an estimate on how popular your keyphrase is.
It also shows related keywords and shows count for them as well, this can be used for inspiration on what your domain name will be.

Try this tool: Overture keyword selector

Ok! so I used this tool and tried different combinations all with the keyword “arcade” somewhere in the URL.
At last I found one good that was available… I registered playarcadefree.com after trying about 50 different domain names.
This is a good way to get a keyword filled domain name if you are a cheap bastard like me and dont´t want to spend a fortune just in the domain name.

There are other ways to

Of course this was just an example on how to do it, there are plenty of ways of finding a good domain name.
Also another way of determing how popular a specific key word is to search google and look at the number of results the search generates.

Google search for business generates 7,480,000,000 results.

Google search for “vacuum cleaners” generates 13,300,000 results.

Google search for “flying monkey” generates 392,000 results.

Conclusion about the number of results generated
As expected the most popular keywords generates a large number of results, and jibbrish keywords like “flying monkey” generates hardly any (compared to the popular that is)
This means that if you want to rank high for the keyword “business” you have a lot of competition.
To rank high for such keywords are no longer Noob SEO and is more advanced then you think.
The trick lies within finding as popular keywords as possible but with as little competion as possible.

So if you just are starting out I wouldn´t recommend to optimize for these keyphrases mentioned above.
Why optimize for keywords that are way out of your league? Dont do it! It´s a waste of time unless you dont have a large scale plan on how to get on the top 10 search results.

A more detailed description of all of the techniques mentioned will come later.

What else?

One of the best ways to find good info about SEO is to join forums and discussion groups, people exchange knowledge and perform tests all the time and are also willing to share the results to you.
A good place to start is to become a member of Digital points forum. A great place that has a lot of answers to all kinds of questions.
There are also plenty of other great forums around here is a list to some of them:

  • Searchen.com forums
  • seochat.com forums
